In the UK, you normally cannot get a Postgraduate Master’s Loan if you already have a Master’s degree or a higher qualification (like a PhD).
Key rule
To qualify for the government Postgraduate Master’s Loan, you must:
Be under 60 at the start of the course
Meet residency requirements
Be studying a full Master’s degree at an eligible UK university
Not already have a Master’s or higher qualification
So if you already hold a Master’s (from the UK or abroad), Student Finance will generally refuse the loan.
A few rare exceptions
You might still be eligible if:
Your existing “Master’s” isn’t actually a postgraduate master’s level (e.g., some Oxbridge MA degrees).
You started but didn’t complete a previous master’s and left for compelling reasons (e.g., illness).
