Your Action-Led Guide to Securing Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSA)
For students on the Make Happen Institute MA in Creative Practice
1. Why bother?
Ideas whisper; action roars – and DSA is funding that turns whispering ideas into fully-amplified work. It can pay for specialist kit (think high-spec laptop, screen-reading software, ergonomic furniture), non-medical support (BSL interpreters, dyslexia tutors), extra travel and other disability-related study costs. Better kit + targeted human help = more bandwidth for breakthrough creativity.
2025-26 single allowance (England) for post-grads: up to £27,783 a year, non-repayable GOV.UK
Separate (often higher) limits apply in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland Disability Rights UK

4. Common snags → action fixes
Make Happen re-frame & fix
“I’m waiting for perfect evidence”
Get discomfortable. Send what you have; add more if asked. Imperfect action beats perfect procrastination.
Form overwhelm
Break into 15-minute sprints. One section per sprint. Use text-to-speech or dictation if writing is fatiguing.
Long supplier lead time
Email approval letter same day; chase weekly. Ask adviser for alternatives if ETA threatens study.
Self-doubt about asking for help
Remember: “Be bold, not certified”
